Does anyone know if we still "need" to calibrate the gimbal with the bird on it's back? - resting on the motors.

Hello. It requires you to do calibration whenever you restart the motor. With the latest firmware, the motor remembers your last calibration and does not need to be re-calibrated every time it is turned on unless you swap lenses or change the motor position after the motor has been shut off.

You are talking about IMU calibration.
I haven't done it for a year but the app will guide you through the process and let you know how to face the drone.

During Gimbal calibration you don't move the drone at all.

Yes if you have trouble getting the camera pointing straight ahead it is advised to calibrate it balancing on the rear motors but it seem to fall back being non centered sooner or later.
