DaVinci Resolve: probably the best free editing software (used even in professional works, especially for color grading), even tho is not really user-friendly at start

you can also use iMovie if you're on a Mac, it will be simpler then DaVinci, give both a try and then choose your favorite

iMovies is free on Mac and is a good one to start out with

I have the same problem as you do, going from Adobe and at the moment trying out the "hit film express".
In my comparison so far I have compared the most used effect/transistions I normally do and compare if it's available in my "next" software.

Hit film works on both Windows and Mac which is a requirement for me, since I do my "travel" work on the Mac and when at home using windows.
