I have noticed that my batteries have been swelling up a little after flying. Is this a concern? I have not had any errors or problems with them but fear that there may be catastrophic failure during flight.

Thanks and regards,
Tom

Hi Wanda,

Here is a before and after.

Before Flight

After Flight

I would expect things to expand when hot and contract when cold.

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Wanda,

Here is a before and after.

Hello there. Sorry for the late response. Does it affect the performance of the aircraft?

No, flight times are about the same. They may have always done this but didn’t really notice until lately. I was just wondering if it was normal for them to do this and if they tend to do this more with age.

Thanks and best regards,
Tom

Is there any error message showing in the app? Can you take a screenshot of your battery settings?

You have a bad cell. It is swelling due to the current draw which generates heat. It could let go at any time and could cause a fire at any time including charging.

Thanks for your reply. All 4 of my batteries are doing this but only during discharge and return to normal after they cool down. They don’t do it during charging. Everything I have seen on swellon batteries are that they stay swollen. This is not the case with me.

Tom

Could it be the heater in the battery? I have never experienced this. Are you using the supplied charger?

Yes, I am using the supplied charger. All 4 have about 100 charges on them.

Interesting, I will have a look next time I do a charge. I find the charge percentage per battery about the same. They are not equal.

Thank you for the screenshot. Although there's no error now, it's not advised to use those batteries. If this battery is still in warranty, you can send them to the repair center and change new one.

Seeing this again, is like    deja vu

I gave you some info and photos on your other posting. Although you put more information in this posting about your batteries.       I will not waste my time in the future.

This was the original post about the problem I am having. The other was more of a question about how many charge cycles users are getting and wanted it separate from this one. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

If I were you...........and had $6k floating around in the air........ I would set my Critical low battery at 15% and the low Battery warning at 25%

Plan on landing at 20 to 25% worst case.   You are seeing the swelling due to the stress these batteries are under when voltage gets that low.

I've seen plenty of threads and plenty of photos of swollen lipo batteries, and I've even owned a couple.  But when they're swollen, they stay swollen.  The swelling doesn't shrink when they cool down.  So from what I can tell, this is a unique phenomena.  I don't know what to make of it.

I'm going to buy 4 more batteries but, the problem I have is, it is my understanding that the average number of charging cycles is around 200. I have only 100 on them and I don't fly the bird hard. Also, I land when it is around 30%
