Guess I just learned the hard way.
I have the Phantom 4 Pro + V2.0 with the built in screen.
After logging out of the app at home and travelling to my local airfield for first flight testing, I found I could not log back in without a wi fi connection.
I didn't have the password for the clubhouse wi fi and had to give it up. Surely, keeping the app logged in will allow me to fly where there is NO wi fi. RIGHT?
The aircraft only needs to see that the App' has been logged on at some point (and not logged off). After that no wifi nor cell connection is needed to fly, so you are correct.
Good point in post number 2 about using mobile phone hotspot if needed.
That really sucks. I actually thing DJI does TOO much policing of our flying. They are taking a lot of responsibility in governing when and where we fly. They put the liability on the pilot. No other manufactures that I know of regulate so much, which is why you have to log in so they can track and keep you from flying.

Really? DJI tracks you?
How would they be able to do that?

You log in in a NO FLY ZONE and you cannot start your drone. They control where and when you can fly. Internet is not required to fly a drone. but DJI makes it so they can control where you fly. I do not mean they are tracking you live, but they have built in measures to monitor and oversee your flights.
