Yes it was. Unfortunately, the sun was right in the lens for the killer shot of the castle, and by evening when the sun would have been at the right angle, the weather had closed in and rain stopped play.

Aloha Roger,

After your post, I looked up the museum on Google Earth.  But none of the photos were like this.  Much, much better!  Now it all makes sense.  There were plenty of these kind boats and their narrow canals in Google Earth so I got some understanding.

Aloha Roger,

Are there maximum draft and minimum depth regulations for these canals and in the rest of Europe?  I know some areas will be regulated or at least warning signs posted and some unregulated.  Things like seasonal and tidal high and low water.  The Lock System was designed to manage that but I was always curious if one could be assured, based on draft, that they could make it from point "A" to point "B".

Do you see signs or other indications in the area of how one actually navigates these canals?  Are there maps like our gas stations have for the canals in the area?

Sorry to be so inquisitive, but you had to open this can of worms!  It has always been fascinating.

Aloha and Drone On!

Hi Ken. The boats on these waterways are of very shallow draft (or draught). Nominally a metre or less.
The canal system in the UK appears to have no regulation depth, but in general should be around 1.5 metres. Regulation max speed is 4 mph to avoid bank erosion.
The entire system fell into decay in the mid 20th century, and it was largely due to the efforts of volunteers that they were restored.
Silting up continues to be a problem, and occasional groundings occur on moorings by the banks.
At the moment, due to drought conditions in the UK, dozens of miles of canal have become un-navigable due to falling water levels, and have been temporarily closed by the water authority.
The Lancaster canal is currently open where we were on Tuesday.

Aloha Roger,

Mahalo!  I had a feeling that was the way it is.  The news of the drought has even reached Hawai'i.  Remember now, do not have too much fun without me!  Did you bring your Mavic?  Is your P4 ready yet?

BTW, you are traveling on the canals?  Or are you just traveling along side the canals?

Aloha and Drone On!

Hi Ken. One is never far from a canal in the UK
We're travelling by car, just happens that the two locations visited are by the waterways.
The Mavic PP is the drone for this trip. The phantom 4 is undergoing repairs after a slight mishap
Pilot error.
