Following my previous aerial films with an abandoned subject, I present to you another one...Staten Island, New York's very first hospital, Bayley Seton Hospital. It's got a long history and was previously the set of 'Arkham Asylum' for the hit TV show Gotham. But it’s never been seen from above...at least not like this! If you're aware of any abandoned locations in New York/New Jersey that would make for a great aerial film, drop it in the comments below. Enjoy these aerial views of the abandoned Bayley Seton Hospital & check out the history as well if you’d like! (I’ve included some links below!)

“The grounds of BSH house Staten Island’s first hospital, an historic colonnaded structure built in the 1830s to serve ailing retired naval and merchant sailors, appropriately named “the Seamen’s Retreat.”

“While Staten’s Bayley Seton Hospital is still up and running, eight of the twelve buildings located on the 20-acre Stapleton campus have been abandoned—so it’s hella creepy here.”

Nicely done. I think subjects this beautiful could definitely violate the traditional 2 minute video rule. So much beauty to take in with such short cut scenes.

Yeah I usually stick to 1-2 minutes for a solo subject like this where as a vacation or bigger project I'll go between 3-5 minutes...but there were a lot of features I wanted to capture here haha...Can you imagine the amount of more detail I would have gotten if the Mavic Air's transition wasn't so bad? I can't fly the thing more than 50 feet without a glitch transmission to my phone! Very frustrating but I got it done!

I would think the same but it’s no surprise in SINY. Remember my other abandoned hospital video? Crazy stuff https://youtu.be/moVm16rGWiA
Another excellent video but also somewhat sad to watch. If they want to give these places back to nature, fair enough. But then they should demolish and really give back the space.
Matthew,
Very impressive videos.
You do an excellent job capturing the essence of the hospitals.
My favorite one is the Seaview Hospital and NYC Farm Colony video.
Thanks for sharing
I am looking forward to seeing your next aerial of an abandoned building.

There was talk of revamping the building to turn it into a community center in 2011 but that didn't go through. Although there is some work that is going on. I've noticed as I drove by a couple times before I filmed.
It was officially abandoned somewhere between 2002-2004.
"Plans to close Bayley Seton emerged in 2004 as Saint Vincent’s, once the largest Catholic Health organization in New York, filed for bankruptcy with a debt of over a billion dollars. At some point during this tumultuous period (artifacts point to the building last being inhabited in 2002,) the former ....."

Thaks for the reply. It's amazing how these things happen... Not just there, but it is a global trend.. I read/heard/viewed something about a brand new city in China, empty.. All the infrastructure is in place, just no people, that would be good to see also

That'd be amazing to see and film. Brand new city that's newly abandoned or that's newly built awaiting inhabitation? Would love to read up on that!
