I want to get some shots.  I am usually exteremely cautious (avoid power lines by huge margins, never flown bvr), but I don't know what to expect if I did fly near windfarms.  Thoughts??? Question is mostly about expected turbulance in front, behind and above... what should I expect...

How is this in any way relevant to the OP's inquiry?  Sometimes you DJI guys baffle the crap outta me.

Hi, we are just posting a video for him to be aware of the best practices when flying the aircraft. We don't want any situation wherein the user will loss signal and losing the aircraft. This is within still the topic above as mentioned he is asking thoughts flying near windfarms. Thank you.

All kidding aside, I think your question is the amount of Turbulence which is nill. The props are geared down and rotate at a slow rotation.  If you are doing general shots (scenic) you will be quite a distance away in order to frame your shots. Be aware of your surroundings at all times and consider any trespass issues.

Wind turbines are huge, you can film from a safe distance.

Keep up wind - in front - so that you don't get into the turbulence coming off the blades.

Set the RTH height higher than the turbine + blade height, that might be considerably higher than you expect, maybe 1000ft if you are flying from lower down the hill and they are in their normal location on top of the hill.

Probably not wise to fly passed them since the blades can interfere with reception, as can the rotating metal machinery at the top of the tower.

Oh.... well... I suppose.... but when I specify wind farm, I am not overly concerned about loss of signal.  I am very concerned about wind turbulence.  I suppose you could post a vid on flying over water too... there might be water near by.... Just sayin...

Trespass issues are at the top of my list.  I will get permission before I go.  You don't think there is much pull into it or very much push away from it?  I don't plan on getting very close, but I want to have some idea what to expect.

Wind turbines generally spin very slowly.  Not sure what turbulence you fear...

More awkward flying into a flock of butterflies... ;-)

Yes, the blade speed at the tips is only around 180 mph, a Phantom should have no issue with the turbulence coming off that

I would have thought the only limiting factor were the wind speed of the air that might be driving the turbines, anything much above 20 m.p.h and you'd likely not be flying anyway.

Sometimes?
That was about as relevant as most answers they give lately.
It's like they have a list of three responses and just pick one at random.
I seriously doubt any of them have ever flown a Phantom.

The smaller ones may only be 160mph, the big offshore ones are closer to 200mph, but they normally run at constant speed, independent of wind speed, so yes, they are all around 180mph when actually generating power.

I wouldn’t wish to be any where near one, when it fails...

They are all small ones, you should try one of the big ones that we built in front of President Trump's Aberdeen golf course   So tall that we can only legally fly a drone to half it's height!

https://www.wired.co.uk/article/ ... n-vattenfall-energy

According to that article the next generation will have a blade tip height of 260m, presumably the following generation will be tall enough that we will hit the Phantom's 500m height limit before we can fly over them!

There should never it be a drone height limit, above the sea...  ;-)

Yes, I have educated myself a little on wind turbines...

Having flown over the ocean out of Aberdeen on helicopters at not much above 400ft on a number of occasions, normally landing on ships, I would have to disagree, it is a reasonably busy airspace out there for travel to everything from wind farms to oil rigs!

We gave up on onshore turbines when the blades got to 58.7m, much easier to deliver them when they are offshore!

"The company overcame various challenges including a legal challenge from Donald Trump in constructing the first turbine – the US president objected to it on the basis it would be visible from his golf course."

And his objections were ousted by local council, Scottish government, and highest U.K court in Westminster.

I live in a very landlocked prairie province.

My logical concerns don’t ever include low flying aircraft, above the seven seas...

The thing is that very few people fly drones in the middle of the ocean.
Most stand on the shore and there's plenty of air traffic in coastal areas.

I do miss all the fresh fish, caught daily though. ;-)

I have proven that any turbulence from the blades is not worth mentioning, it has NIL effect on our drones. My P4P happily hovered behind turbine in 30mph gusts whilst chatting to 2 traffic cops that was interested In the video i was about 80m away, i thought it was about 50m but googles not often wrong lol the part i didnt video i was closer, i wont say how much closer but suffice to say, there is nil effect, even if there was, its not noticeable, the ac would compensated quite easily I will also say that there was no interefence what so ever from the blades nor the nacelle, again, i wont say how close i was but i will say that a drone could not have safely flown between me and and it ;) thats open to a lot but think minimal
