so on my fpv drones, i know i'm supposed to store my lipos at 3.85V/cell.  i know these batteries have a smart discharge feature after something like 7-10 days.  but what if i've just drained my battery down so low, it's beeping incessantly at me to come back home?  what level does that warning come up?  do i need to at least partially charge my batteries before putting them into storage?  what is the suggested practice for maximizing battery longevity?

I charge mine to  between 40 and 60 if i'm going to store for more than 10 days.  The beeping starts at 30% so if i put the battery on the charger for about 10-20 minutes, it's plenty to go store.

but that's just me.  I'm sure there are other people with different opinions!

You can adjust the return to home feature/warning in the DJI Go4 App, I set mine at 20% to allow a safe margin. Never store the batteries fully charged or empty, store at approximately 40% -50% charge to maximise the life of the battery. I also prefer to manage charge and discharge manually rather than rely on the self discharge feature.

That is the official word from DJI.

Like you said, someone will chime in and say their way is correct.

A short flight to bring it down or a usb adapter that enables the Mavic battery to discharge whilst charging a USB device such as a phone.

I gave an upvote too. The batteries should not be stored close to empty.

Since Mavic Air and now with Mavic 2, DJI is actually providing this adapter in the Fly More package.

I think its fair to say that most people agree on the must not's for battery storage. The how you manage in between flights depends on your individual ritual for the most part and the owners battery maintenance OCD

yes.  that's exactly what it comes down to.

and the more you fly, the more that becomes sort of "just what you do..."
