Hi all,

Well, I have no doubt that I might face derision for asking rather than doing all of the research myself, but having done quite a bit of research, I am super confused as to the workflow of getting permission to fly in a restricted zone.  Go to the FAA?  Then do something with DJI?

I need to fly about 75 ft up to get some video of two separate buildings for my client.  Each building is near a small airport and DJIGO won't even let me start the motors.

I'm asking for your input because I am on a tight timeline and I really need some guidance from Those Who Know.

FWIW: I have a Part 107.
Thanks so much,
Matt

Good luck with that.. I do believe DJI has to send something to your bird in order to allow it to take off. I to work in a no fly zone and was able to get Authorization to fly but only indoors (warehouse) and I think ya have to have something from FAA to send to DJI in order for them to release your bird. There might be another way but I’m not knowing .... well kind of do but it’s going to take a few days. Sorry I’m probably no help and more confusing if I would have just said nothing. Lol. Good luck .

on my view they were not give you a permission without proper flying license.

First you will need to hold the apropriate licence that allows you to fly in such an area then you will need written approvals from any and all authorising persons and authorities once you have that you then contact dji they will unlock that area for a period of no more than 24 hours.

A point to note about the 24 hour period :-  dont fly or have your drone within the resricted area as the clock ticks over that 24 hour period. You may loose your drone as the app will automatically lock you back out of that area. Some pilots have had there drones crash due to this happening.

Hi there, thank you for reaching out and we're very sorry for some inconvenience. Regarding that, you can just go to this link https://www.dji.com/flysafe/self-unlock for unlocking the zone.

As for the FAA Authorization

Download Airmap to your phone.........then look into the LAANC portion where you can find out if they will approve your flight ( if your area has been opened yet )

FAA Part 107 is required

Also take a look at the SUAS Facility Maps     https://www.faa.gov/uas/request_waiver/uas_facility_maps/

The maps will list a max altitude in a red box if one is noted by the FAA.

Imagine if Ford, Chevrolet and Chrysler locked out which highways and states your car could drive in. So why do drone owners put up with these limitations?

Do you have a link?  My understanding was that hobbyists could use LAANC as well as Part 107 pilots.

Hey Mark,

I think you are correct, however being in a red NFZ meaning DJI won't allow take off.....he will need Pro Status.  This meaning FAA 107, and that will not guarrentee Laanc Auth either,  even at 75ft AGL along with property owners permission......if the OP is as close to the A/P as he says.....

It is however, worth a try!

Thanks.

I did a search and I'm getting conflicting info on whether hobbyists can or cannot use LAANC.  Seems to me it would be wise to allow hobbyists to use it since there are 10x more hobbyists than 107 pilots.  But what do I know?

Thanks again

Seems that Sect 333 Exempt people can also use LAANC,  but I don't know anyone that has gone through that exercise......

The average Hobbyist isn't going to know anything about NAS, let alone airport traffic/CL Airspace.......or sectional charts

From what I can see LAANC on AirMap is for 107 and 333 Pilots..............................................................

I just entered flight info for "Fly for Fun" in the LAANC app on Airmap.  I am in CL D Air, and within 1.5 miles of the end of runway 9R,  and got Auth to fly........I also have on file an FAA Waiver for Class D air around KSEE.....so I'm already in the computer.......Bad example I guess ;-)
