Tests performed at the University of Dayton Research Institute’s Impact  Physics Lab show that even small drones pose a risk to manned aircraft.

Notice the Front Right arm is the first to impact in the wing and it acts like a knife

A Phantom 2 flying at 238mph without any propellers!

"After calibration work to ensure they could control the speed, orientation and trajectory of a drone, researchers fired a successful shot at the Mooney wing. The researchers then fired a similarly weighted gel “bird” into a different part of the wing to compare results. “The bird did more apparent damage to the leading edge of the wing, but the Phantom penetrated deeper into the wing and damaged the main spar, which the bird did not do.”"

"“It’s not practical to regulate manned air vehicles to try to avoid collisions with a quickly growing population of drones, but it is practical—and we believe it’s necessary—to regulate UAV operation,” Poormon said."

I think it is practical to limit the aircraft speed when it is flying through drone airspace, no need for a light aircraft with thin wall wing surfaces flying at sub 400ft to be going 100mph faster than a Boeing 747 would be!  That extra 100mph means nearly 4 times the energy when it hits a bird, or in the far more unlikely event that it hits a drone.

The problem as we know is not so much the speed of the drone - but the combined impact speed of the two items ... aircraft and drone.

My thoughts are that skin damage of a wing, although serious in todays high tech wing forms, is less risk to overall flight of the aircraft than into an engine or damaging internal mechanism / hydraulics internally.

The Air France Concorde had a sliver of metal slice into a tyre and pieces flew up puncturing the wing .. (yes there was the matter of whether the pilot skewed right on the runway and the reported faulty brake hydraulics that may have contributed) ... the fact is that a small object had a catastrophic effect.

A modern composite wing surface wouldn't tear like that thin aluminium, I guess there would be much less damage.  But in any case, the wing is designed to take this damage since they have shown that it is not much different to a bird strike, same if it goes through an engine.  In normal circumstances this is unlikely since the aircraft wouldn't be doing that speed at altitudes where it was likely to meet either drone or bird.

As for Concord, it was hit from a direction it wasn't designed to be hit from.

Does make you appreciate the importance of knowing what is in your control when you have a drone 400' in the air - especially a 3kg Inspire!

It is mate - quite shocking but out of all of the millions of drones in the world I believe nothing like this has ever actually happened.

That's scary Please always fly with caution and always look around to avoid any obstacle that might cause damage. I suggest practicing the speed and control of every drone model for safety. Thank you.
