I have a mavic platinum and 4 batteries.  Do I have to update firmware and then refresh once for each battery?  Or are there special notifications for battery updates?  

If a firmware update includes a battery update, DJI GO will display an "Inconsistent Firmware Found" message like this when you attempt to use your spare batteries. After installing new aircraft firmware, start up your Mavic with each spare battery to see if any of them need updated.


Note: If you keep all of your batteries updated, you'll only need to check one spare battery to determine if a battery update is available.
