Fort Fenestrelle is a complex compound of three structures spanning over 3km and connected trough a tunnel-wall very much similar to a smaller scale chinese wall starting from the valley town and ramping up the mountain.
The images were shot during a training session of the drone team of the Carabinieri National Association here in Piedmont, Italy.
We had little time and no preparation or knowlede of the location to shoot and the light was very harsh being filmed between 11:30 am to 15:00 pm with lunch break in between so we had to manage.
The “short“ was filmed entirely with a Phantom 4 Pro even in the tunnels: we had to improvise using the P4P as a handheld gimbal as we felt the need to convey the emotions that people of the past might have felt during the time of war or incarceration.
As a matter of fact the fort wasn't just a military outpost cutting the valley in two, it was also a prison where people would often suffer a freezing death being located in high mountain.
The coloration was choosen to better convey the feeling half way between a memory of the past and reality while also enhancing the lonliness and the suffering feeling of the musical score.
The passage trough light - darkness - light tells a story of falling in disgrace and redeption, desperation and salvation, very much what happened at that time, at least this is my personal interpretation.
We didn't have a chanche to visit the prisons and the military quarters, we had to cut several scenes due to the presence of the occasional tourist and we also had issue with remote controller calibration so most of the scenes with a rotation on the yaw axis came out junk thus the second half of the video unfortunately lacks a bit of visual variety at least for my standards.
The flight were authorized by the local autorities and the Orsiera Rocciavrè natural park manager.
