Goodmorning, I was wondering how to open and eventually edit a H.265 video with a freeware sw (windows). I tried VLC and DaVinciResolve 15 but they don't work. Thank you!

If there are codecs installed for H.265 then any player can play the video so make sure or try installing a free codecs application.

Hi there. thank you for reaching out. Regarding your concern, you'll be needing the H.265 codec for your player for you to be able to play your video.

Microsoft provides an HEVC Video Extension for WMP in it's app store.
VLC handles h265 perfectly if you have a recent version.
Davinci 15 requires the studio version which you need to purchase.

Goodmorning! Windows 7. The best solution would be VLC for me.

Hi Eric! When I try to open a H.265 video with the latest version of VLC, the video doesn't flow, it stops at the firsts frame. I have a i7 with 16 GB of ram and a NVIDIA 850 m (2 GB DDR3).

Check this. Changes in file caching can help a lot:

VLC should be able to play H.265 (v3+) on Windows 7 as it doesn't depend on any codecs in the OS.

If you're hoping to edit anything, one option might be to convert your Mavic H.265 footage to H.264 with Handbrake (it's free) and go from there.

Also, I'd advise updating to Windows 10.

You have Win 7 and I can't remember if it came with it but Win 10 has a native player called "Movies & TV". That player handles h265 videos better than VLC. But it's just a player, nothing for editing.

If its possible you may want to consider a new PC set up. Win 10, 64bit. Lot's of RAM and graphic power.
The thing with Davinci is it relies more on GPU power as opposed to other professional software out there that relies on CPU.

It's a very wide field and I'm not an expert - I'm just a little further than you are ;-)

Players usually install some codecs that mainly needed but not all codecs, therefore, you have to add full package codecs since you are an audio or video man!

Download full codecs from the link http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_codec_pack.htm.

Hi Eric13. Davinci Resolve 15 (free version) will open H265 10-bit videos, you just can't save them back as H265, but it'll happily save them as H264.

Note: you do need to install a H265 codec. On Windows 10 the Microsoft HEVC Video Extension for WMP on the App Store works just fine.

I had Davinci 15 beta and wasn't able to view my h265 files.
I read I would need the studio version so I bought the final 15 studio version which has just been released two days before.

In my case Da vinci was able to read H.265 but it just slowed the computer down to sloth speed. Honestly I give up playing with H.265 and even though I will be missing that 10 bit color, I will enjoy H.264 and the ease of working with it.

Have you tried using the 'Optimized Media' feature in Resolve? I edit my H265 videos without any problems once I discovered it. There's a very good video describing how to do it here:

Your computer probably isnt fast enough.  Only the newer (8th gen) onwards CPUs support hardware decode of normal profile 10 bit HEVC.
I'd guess you have an older i7 (judging by the dated video card).

Rob I've seen this video and tried his recommendation of using a proxy file, however it still is slow.  I may add some more ram to my computer but still my video card is only 2 gb memory.

As mentioned before:
Davinci relies heavily on GPU power. Not exclusively of course.

This might give you some more insight. It's about an older Davinci version but it still applies:
https://www.cinema5d.com/boost-davinci-resolve-performance/

Click on the following link to download Blackmagics configuration guide.
On page 42 they recommend 8GB or more of GPU memory!
