You don't have to turn them off, but it's something to try if you experience connection issues while flying.

Ok another question, I am coming from the heli world and there we used a Tx Rx for the most part that was all that was needed to fly. How and what exactly does the MA use?

Thank you for reaching DJI forum. You can turn it on or off, it depends on your preference. I would recommend to turn them off and put your device on airplane mode. A lot mobile devices have a setting airplane mode, which disables Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Setting your phone to airplane mode also helps conserve battery life.
