Does it make sense to always capture video in 4K if the final edited video is going to playback in 1080P?

Yup, when I play back video recorded in 4k and then record the same thing in 1080 I see a huge difference even on my 1080p monitor..  Recording in 4k makes video on a 1080 monitor noticeable more crisp, sharp, and dynamic..  Try it sometime. Record the same flight path at the same height, distance and speed in 1080 and 4k and then play them back on a 1080 monitor and you will see a nice difference in picture quality..  If your after a higher frames per second then recording in 1080 would be best but otherwise I don't think it is

Thus far I've stuck with my GoPro Studio software (free). It imports the files as if they were GoPro native. The only thing I've seen missing is the "remove fish-eye" but with the Phantom's camera, you don't need it.

Shooting in 4K and then processing into 1080P allows much better "panning and zooming." The picture is literally bigger and allows a lot of latitude you won't get if you start with a lower resolution.

Additionally, you'll hear complaints like:
"...there aren't that many TVs out there that will display 4K..."
"...you need a really, really fast machine to process 4K..."

You need a really, really powerful machine to process 4K into 4K. A modest amount of power can process the 4K into 1080P. Additionally, storage is cheap. You can keep that 4K original and re-process it later when 4K is more common and computers are even more powerful.

I use 1060 60fps on my Pro.

4K just take too much memory and time to edit, etc......

For 90% of users that is probably more than good enough. A couple discerning editors may claim differently......but I also remember when audiophiles told me that CD's just could not possibly measure up in sound quality to a reel to reel and that no one in their right mind would EVER listen to audio dumped down to mp3 low data rates (hint: 98% of the world now listens that way).

If your final cuts are going to hollywood or to big screen at the Indie Film Festival that's another thing. But if, like me, your final product goes on youtube or vimeo you are more than fine with 1080.

You must have the Phantom -3...

Just a small bug, in the forum soup...

Sorry.
