The Colors of Autumn or Fall as we call it in America are truly spectacular, and from an elevated position they can be admired even more as you can see more variety of colors across the shot.
This shot was taken on Iceland’s Golden Circle during the autumn period. The shot was at around 10 AM which allowed the sun to be slightly above the horizon, not too high.
Things to consider when taking Top-Down Photos: 1. Local Laws and regulations: it is important to know if there are any specific laws around max flight altitude for the location you choose to fly on.
2. If there are altitude regulations, get creative about how you capture the best possible angle for the shot while staying compliant with local laws.
3. Scout location: I like using Google Maps to find interesting locations, but sometimes it just takes putting the drone up in the air and discovering for the first time the aerial perspective of a location you are at. NOTE: this truly distinguishes photographer and their style as creativity is what rules here.
4. It is important to consider the angle of the sun from the horizon when taking top to bottom shots of landscapes as it accentuates shadows on the landscape and adds body to the composition of the shot. You want to try to avoid Mid-day sun or when the sun is at its highest point since this will create a more harsh light reflection on the surface you want to take a picture of.
5. Used ND/PL filters. ND to help reduce shutter speed for a more natural look and PL will aid in color richness and natural saturation as well as improving glare reduction.
