I live in Valtellina, one of the most beautiful valley in North Italy, and every year when it comes to autumn i fall in love with all the color that the nature deserve us. The question was how can i share this wondeful scenery to all, making benefit of my passion for photography, especially drone photography. I started up with an idea, began only as a joke with my friends: what will be the best town of the valley in this amazing season? So i organised an intagram poll (dado_pola), one for each day where every town could have its chance to win. Every evening i posted two photos and waiting for my followers to vote; For me it was a race with the sun becase of the short days: take a photo of the selected town before the sun goes down. But then when i come home and see how beautiful this colorful shots are and see all the community happy to see their town from a different point of view, it was really worth.
So let's see some of the shot i'm talking about:
The first city was Chiuro, with its bell tower coming out almost as he wants reaching the sun on the hill.
Tip 1:
Golden Hour It is one of the best moments for taking photography, because of the warm color and the softness of the light.
Near it there is Teglio, a famous city in all the world for its typical food Pizzoccheri, do you know them?
Tip 2:
Shoot RAW
I own a Dji Mavic pro and like all other dji drones have the possibility of take photo in raw format, that means that the camera preserve all the data of your shot and give you the ability of making an amazing editing in post production. Here for example i've pumped up the saturation of the orange in order to make it stand out against the other colors.
Valtellina is also famous for its wine production and in Bianzone you can see one of the newest vineyards cultivation techniques: Check out them from above:
Tip 3:
Use lines
To create a strong composition use lines in your frame and make sure that they lead to the main point. With drone we are so advantaged because we can move and select the perfect point to reach a solid composition of our image.
Another example where i've used this composition trick is the Lovero's shot:
This is one of my favourite shot i've ever taken with my mavic, look the road that leads to the little church and the shape of the village. This little town has won the second place!
Tip 4:
Plan you shot
Before going out and fly your drone, plan your photos and location. I use apps like google earth and Gmaps. So you can get an idea from where, at what height and direction take your perfect shot.
But let's go on with the other towns, this is Tovo Sant'Agata:
To represent this town i've selected this litte church, i simply fell in love with all this warm colors around it.
Its the time of my favourite shot of this little challenge, Tresivio. In particular look at the sky, it seems a painted picture. The Autumn sunsets are always full of colors and nice shapes.
Tip 5:
Take some time
Don't have rush while shooting. With drone you have few minutes to fly because of the battery, so it is better to organize your small trip before to take off.
Tip 6:
You are a guest
Keep in mind that you are not alone, in almost every filght there were birds that flew around my drone. So have respect for them. This town is Grosotto:
And then the last town in the competition Tirano. A city famous for the terminus station of the bernina express train.
And Yes this is also the winner of this little game:
Tip 7:
AEB
Especially in backlight condition like all this sunsets, Dji give us the opportunity to use AEB mode: the drone will take multiple shot at different exposure in order to merge them in post production and reach a correct exposure of the scene.
For each of the last tree towns remained i have taken another picture lets see the results:
Teglio 3rd:
Lovero 2nd:
Tirano 1st
I had so much fun creating and sharing these images
And what about you? Let me know what's your favourite!
