New GPS service begins using Michibiki satellites

Japan has launched a new GPS service accurate to within several centimeters thanks to its Michibiki satellites.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and former astronaut Naoko Yamazaki attended a ceremony in Tokyo on Thursday to mark the start of the location service.

Government officials say the around-the-clock service was made possible by the launch of 4 Michibiki satellites between 2010 and 2017.

Devices able to pick up signals from the satellites can greatly reduce the margin of error from the current 10 meters.

The government plans to launch 3 more satellites by fiscal 2023 to beef up the system.

Abe said GPS is now indispensable, as more and more gadgets like car navigation systems and smartphone map apps come to rely on it.

He said Michibiki is turning a new page in history and that he is thrilled to witness how the new service will bring positive changes to people's daily lives.

The government aims to make use of Michibiki satellites in the development of self-driving vehicles, fully automated farm machinery, and drone delivery services.

GPS has become indispensable in today's world.  The reason new satellites are being deployed to keep the system working, updated and more accurate for both positioning and timing.   Improved accuracy is important for surveyors, cartographers, etc. where inches often make the difference.  However, I doubt such improved accuracy would make much difference for our DJI drones.  Even on a long, circuitous flight, RTH brings it home within a few feet (provided sufficient satellites).  There would be little advantage to having better accuracy than that.  Though, it may make more satellites available, an advantage to those areas that suffer low satellite counts at times.

RedHotPoker - you're absolutely right.  I should have made it clear in my post that improved accuracy would add little to improve EXISTING drones.  But, it would surely open the door for future innovations.  No doubt DJI will quickly exploit the features of the new constellations to provide features not even dreamed of yet.  Thanks for posting the information, as obviously GPS is an integral part of our drones and something many of us have an interest in and should be knowledgeable about.

Most people don’t even know how it works nor Why gps is such a wonderful science.  Important tool.

It’s used in numerous applications,  that we mostly take for granted today.
Unless it’s used in our own everyday lives such as thee much loved DJI products.
