Well, looks like I flew it into a tree. I guess no excuses but from my vantage point which was fairly close, it seemed I was clear of any obstacles. Why didn't the obstacle avoidance work?

There's the blue sky technique.  You know it?  Just keep your Phantom's background surrounded by blue sky at all times and you won't hit anything.  It's a thing.  Works great.

The side sensors are not active when flying in P-mode.

'Why didn't the obstacle avoidance work?'

According to the log, the obstacle avoidance did work, about 0.6 seconds before the end of the flight. But in any event, obstacle avoidance does not always work on trees, especially if they are bare and whispy, like in winter.

I once flew straight into a tree on purpose slow, just to test the sensors and it worked fine. That was the forward sensors, i was also moving slow on this crash but sideways as I was starting an orbit around a building.

I guess I should have read that the sensors do not work but who would have thought the side sensors to not work in P mode which is the most common mode.

The side sensors do not work as well as the front and rear sensors as they are a different technology.

Nahhh! just go easy. You are not alone. The hard lessons are the best lessons. We don't forget those.

yea, if you are very good mechanical skills you can find a empty shell and rebuild it, or have insurance cover it, if you have it.
