Dec 31 ... temps dip and ice starts reforming ... birds collecting on the ice skin - it really is just a skin out there !





Today Jan 1 ... wind is strong and temps are up ... has driven the ice away ... so back to water again. Forecast is for temps to drop after a few days ...

Bog standard Windows Live Essentials Movie Maker ... the simple one !!

The yacht ? She has solid 50mm GRP hull ... built like the proverbial tank. Unlike many of todays builds that have foam or balsa sandwich construction to keep weight down.  She has twin keels so takes the ground upright.

There's no worries leaving her in ... in fact one year - the authorities dynamited the river ice and she was lifted and plonked half up into the garden ... I'll try and find the photos ...

Found them ...

So here she is sitting reasonably OK ..



You can just make out the ice / water wall moving downriver towards us ... water is 5m high and ice is near 10m ...



River ice is moving and cracking ... sound is like 1000 excavators all at once !



Its breaking up the ice in my channel even before it gets to us ...



Overall scene ... see the ice wall in the distance ..



All we could do was listen to it coming and pray that all would be OK ... problem was Authorities only dynamited once instead of following its progress and repeating as it hit bends etc. My channel and property being on the outside bend was a straight line for it ... it climbed up and over the bank and forced everything in its path ...

Here it is at 14m high, from channel level to its highest, blocking my channel .... even TV cameras and people came to see it ...





These blocks of ice are over 50cms thick and it treated them like paper !









Given that ... I think I can safely say my boat can survive quite well !!
