Hi there,

I'm a noob with drones.
I've made a half a dozen videos and I have some doubts about H264 or H265.
When I' using H265 I can take photos with JPEG and RAW. But, When I'm using H264 I just can take JPEG's. Any explanation about this?
On the other hand, when I'm filming using the quickshots mode, every clip is filmed in H264. In H265 that is not happening...

Am I right and that's true or there is some missing information from me?

I apreciate your comments.

Thank You

H.265 and 264 are video codecs, nothing to do with shooting RAWs or JPGs.

Quickshots are always in H.264 Full HD 30 FPS, you can't change that.

Hi, thanks for the inquiry. the H264 and H265 are video codecs which means not related to the image format of the image which is RAW or JPG. As of the time being H265 codec is not supported by our Quickshot video. Thank you for understanding and support.

If you shot videos in H.265, the size of the video would be smaller. H.265 compresses more than H.264. Some device doesn't support H.265 but most of them do.
I'm not very sure.

By the way, I think you cannot download H.265 videos form your drone to your phone by using the APP, you have to pull it out from an sd card. However, you can download H.264 video to your phone directly from your drone.

The size of the video doesn't change if you change the codec - both codecs deliver 100MBit/s to your SD card. But H.265 is much more efficient and can pack much more information into the video.

H265 is 10 bit in DLogM, H264 is only 8 bit, so for the same file size H265 packs in 20% or more data to be used in post processing.

Generally 8bit can display 256 shades of color where 10bit can display 1024 shades.

As a side note - it might also be worth considering the overhead of doing post-processing of H.265 video (if you do any post-processing that is).

Processing (and even just playing/decoding) H.265 encoded video will require a lot more processing power than H.264 encoded video.

If you have a relatively new Intel CPU (6th generation or newer) then you should be good to go with full H.265 support.

Here is a handy wikipedia article showing codec support for different intel CPU generations:

Thanks for the CPU look up table. I guess I will be stuck with H264 for a while.

Another option is that a number of GPU's now support direct hardware codec for H265

I wouldnt worry. I have seen plenty of abysmal edits done in 265.

Thanks for all of your answers. It's been very helpfull. I've decided to record in H265, the color is better and in post processing I feel more confortable editing. But when I see my videos on a 4K TV the image is very compressed and I can't change it to 16:9...
I process my videos in 2.7K 60 fps.

Never used DlogM till now. I´ll give it a try soon.
