i have wifi iPad mini. I have map caching on. How do I know if it's caching a map? Is there any indicator?

Rob,

Go into your camera view, then into the map view. Move around the map of the area you're going to be flying in. Move all around the area, zooming in and out. Once you've covered that area completely, exit the app and disconnect your iPad from your internet connection. Now go back into the app while not being connected to the Internet. Go back to the map view in the app. The area you moved around in should still show even though you aren't connected to the Internet. If it does, that area is now cached and you're good to go!

That never works for me, perhaps if I zoom out so that the country is visible I get a low resolution version. The only way I have managed to get maps on the iPad 2 Wifi is to use bluetooth for a personal hotspot. Bluetooth not Wifi as wifi interferes with the lightbridge and RC.
