After numerous delays that dragged for nearly a month, this morning launch of a Delta IV Heavy rocket from Vandenberg AFB went almost on schedule, 11:10 instead of 11:05.

https://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/local/article224791910.html

Timing was subpar (midday), so no cool upper atmosphere show, but at least it was clear and I got some lame footage from my front yard (400ft in the air) in Thousand Oaks, CA 91362, 120+ miles away.

Thank you, you're too kind.
I myself am mildly disappointed, but, to my defence, at 120 miles away, shooting at mid-day with a wide-angle lens there was no way to get anything substantially more visually pleasant.
The important part is now I know the exact angle to the Vanderberg AFB from me, so next time (and they launch almost monthly) I should be able to point the camera directly onto it without searching.

Thank you!
I would not call 120 miles "close", hehe, though, of course, it beats 99.99999% of the rest of the world population
Too bad the timing was mid-day. Original launch (they first tried it before Xmas) was scheduled for 6pm, which would have created a magnificent display in the upper atmosphere, as the fumes would be lit by the setting sun against a dark night sky, Oh well, maybe next time.

On a big screen I saw it too, but on a smartphone it took me a few seconds ;)
Satellites. Details in the link.
No, you can't hear it from over 120 miles and few mountain ridges.

That's the great thing in this hobby - nothing is final and you can always return to improve.

Very nice footage, the last spacecraft I seen was an Apollo launch in the 1960's and only knew what it was when pointed out by a crew member from USS Littlerock visiting us on a stop over. Otherwise wouldn't have seen diddlysquat.

As I have mentioned earlier, the timing of the launch was very unfortunate for long-distance photography. When they launch at dusk/dawn it can be truly spectacular.

Yeah, right! And f2.8 at that, not measly f4, with a full frame 35mm sensor.
Can you imagine a consumer drone capable of supporting that kind of glass? You'd need a full-size Predator...
Or just get an ulta-lite, and get into the air myself with all the gear
Oh, well, one day...
