Just tried to take off near the coast to shoot some seagals sitting on the seawall. It's quite foggy today, but I didn't mind because I wasn't going to fly too far. Home Point wasn't updated on the land, so I tried to increase an altitude. At aboute 15 metres heght (45ft) it was updated and I desided to move to the shooting point. But once I started to reduce an altitude, RC said: 'Landing!' and drone immediately drop for about 5-7 metres. I pushed left stick Up and looked on the screen. It said that an altitud was 0,7 metres, but drone hanged over 10 metres above the sea level. I looked on the drone, it drifted wierdly in undefined directions and didn't hold an altitude. Slowly I led it to me and landed. God bless! After landing an altitude was -3 metres even I landed in the same spot where took off.

Very good advice thank you. If you switch to Sports mode could that disable sensors and avoid the landing mode?

Oh, I wouldn't recommend anyone even try to switch in Sport mode with that weather condition.

My current situation with fog you can see on the picture below and decide how it tough to fly with this visibility distance (sea must be seen on the background).

I'm surprised - reading your posts over the past few months I didn't think you would ever get caught flying in the fog
So glad you had a good outcome!  Great advice.
Thanks.

No you misunderstand my point. I'm not saying to switch to Sports mode so you can thrash the spark and take risks. I'm suggesting the minute the spark sensors are fooled by the fog switch to Sports mode which I think might disable all the sensors. Then you can get the spark to descend through the fog and then once you can see it you can turn off Sports mode and do the usual landing.

The risk is if the spark thinks it's landed maybe turns off the motors or a slooow descent eats the battery and it's still 100m up in the air.....

Make sense?

In Sport mode only an Obstacle Avoidance sensor is disabled. So VPS sensor, barometer and Infrared sensor still work (in particular way).
All you need in a such situation are slow movements. I have had similar problem when flew in snowfall. An Obstacle Avoidance sensor recognized snowflakes as a berrier and stoped the drone every second metre of motion. I began moving very slowly and could manage the situation.

First hand experience post!
Thank you for sharing..

Litchi has a setting for disabling downward sensors.
Will prob result in hard landings and no precision landing...

Its handy just for getting through fog. Then turn it back on to land. Better than running out of battery. That is gonna be a very hard landing.

Agree, it's completely my fault. Even be aware of consequences sometimes do not stop us from stupid actions. I had three full charged battery and wanted to discharge them before weekend (I can't fly on weekends, father’s days, you know). So that happened.

Maybe sooner or later I will try Litchi. But not for switching off downward sensors. I am interested in some intelligent modes: PoI, TapFly Free and WayPoints.

Good advice Lysak2003. The closest I have come to having a flyaway was when a fog rolled in while I was flying. Fortunately the Sparks compass was still working and I could turn it towards me and land. Definitely scary!

switching to sports mode only turns off front sensors
