So in a weeks time I am having my first holiday abroad in 20 years. Am off to Les Deserts in France close to the Alps. Will be taking my drones with me and have already looked up the rules etc for flying. Do any of you more seasoned travellers have any advice for France ? Am kind of new to this travelling abroad thing and am worried I am forgetting something glaringly obvious.

Hi, there. Thank you for reaching out. We're hoping that you could get the best recommendation from our fellow DJI co-pilots who already flown their aircraft in France. Thank you for your continued support and Happy flying always. Cheers!

You need to take an online exam, I did mine a few weeks ago and it didnt take too long,  they do have a 100% score to pass. See https://fox-alphatango.aviation-civile.gouv.fr/en/

Thank you for the link. Just completed it and passed. However, I don't know about you, but the website is bloody awful. A couple of times I had a question where there was only one answer. However instead of 4 answers I had 8. For example:-

If you see a helicopter you must-

a) Keep
b) flying level
c) Immediately
d) stop
e) and land
f) watch the aircraft

I selected d) Stop. This it counted as wrong. Due to this I got 95% so had to retake. The next time the formatting  was correct and I had 4 options. It did this a few times.

I didnt have that issue,  but at least its free and you have a certificate you have to carry with your drone that last 5 years.

Good luck and have a great trip. I go to France stargazing and take a lithium battery with me to power a dew heater for the scope, if you're flying to get to France, check what the airlines requirements are re the batteries. I flew with Ryan Air and they had to go as hand luggage...
