Hey Guys,

I thought I would share my experience in studying for, writing and passing the Canadian Drone Pilot Basic Operations exam.

Overall, the exam is definitely challening and should not be taken lightly but if you put in some quality study time it is really not that difficult to pass.

Hope it's helpful to those of you still considering taking the exam and for you drone enthusiasts from other countries, you get a little taste of what's required to fly a drone in Canada.

Happy flying!

$10 to write the test, $5 to register your drone. Same price for Basic or Advanced exam. I did the Basic one. No expiry date on the license but you must demonstrate "recency" within two years of obtaining. So, you have to demonstrably keep your skills current with seminars, workshops and training.

As I understand it, you can apply to Transport canada for an exemption for the time you are here.
This link should help:

Have you noticed that the geo area information in DGI GO 4 does not show Canadian controlled airspace around airports?  Only the 3NM ring from the airport without consideration for a control zone! My airport (Medicine Hat) has a 5NM control zone, which pretty much restricts all flight within the city unless you get RPAS Authorization.

It should not be taken lightly indeed. I did not, but even with 700 CDN worth ground school training I failed my first exam badly. Next approach rendered me passing 85%, only after repeated ground school session (thankfully as a lifetime alumni) and intensive homework. And that's only basic certificate weight!

What surprised me the most, however, is that only a small fraction of exam topics is directly related to the scope of basic drone operation, while many are not even remotely significant (i.e. airport runways markings, cloud formation names, radio communication vocabulary etc.). Well, knowledge never hurts, but be prepared for this exam anyway, as OP said so wisely ...

I'm new here, also in Canada.
Does every drone user need the basic license?
Instead of "maintaining your license" can you simply rewrite the test every two years?
What benefit is the "advanced" license?

Thanks!

US visitors are out of luck.  Foreign nationals cannot register their drones but have to apply for special application last time I read the new rules.

I just finished writing my basic exam, and miracle of miracles...... I PASSED!    Thanks to a number of youtube videos, studying the CAR 900 documents, glancing at the AIM, and other documents, previous interest in becoming a private pilot, and studying for a private pilot licence, and my geology / geography knowledge......

It sure would have been easier if there was a government study guide available.
All I need to do now id get a drone bigger than my TELLO    LOL

Quite interesting so see how this kind of exams will be in future. I also hope that you could have one license for Europe etc, so it would make travelling easier.

Thanks so much SCoutts - once you've passed how do you upload the information so that the drone will fly. I'm out in the wilderness with a Mavic Pro and it's not clear once I have my licence how I unlock the drone which currently won't even take off. Chris vT
