This region is rich with copper, the biggest open copper mine is a few km. away. Mining was developed here since age's behind that peak lies a fortress guarding the pass and mines (as far as I know ;) )here some info but you should use google translate ;) http://www.bulgariancastles.com/bg/node/4911
