I checked the programming API. Looks like for firing, we can only fire Gel beads, not laser. Programming is normally indoors. It would get pretty messy to cleanup the carpet due to these beads.

I am wondering when the API will enable us to fire laser?

Are you sure this really maps to firing with the ir? because the launch trajectory light is the wide ir transmitter while I think the actual ir shots go through the narrow ir transmitter. Documentation is really not clear about this so I am not 100% sure.

I have confirmed that the trajectory light is a visible light only and *NOT* the IR blaster.  I built an IR detector out of an arduino and it's not tripped when you use the trajectory light. (When you use the manual control it fires hex encoding 0x6F454265)
