Little over a year old, environmental temperature here in Malta can be in the 90's on hot summer days, not used that often. Is this now just a $80 paperweight?

Most definitely. I doubt it would fit back in the aircraft.
I would probably fail suddenly if you managed to fly with it anyway.

I wouldn't risk flying with it especially in more populated areas, just wouldn't feel comfortable even if it did end up fine.

Batteries are definitely in the trash. Not worth the risk of drones. Even during storage, such batteries can get an internal short circuit and ignite or explode.

definately do not fly with it - the battery could pop out or self combust without much more warning - therefore also not good as a paper weight either

As soon as any of my batteries ‘puff’ I dispose of them properly and replace them. Not worth taking the risk. Same for props, any chips sign of damage and I replace them.

As others have said, yes get rid of it in a recycle facility. You're asking for some serious trouble if you even try to use it.

Agreed!  Why risk $800 of gear by getting squeezing more flights out of an old $75 battery?

Good one. And if he did use the battery, he would could very well be in a "jam"!

Sorry, couldn't resist following up your butter joke.

As mentioned before, not only don't use but also get rid of it soonest at a proper place - the risk of short circuit and fire is pretty high.

Hello and good day KushDi. I am sorry to know that you are having this issue regarding the batteries of your DJI Mavic Air. Battery bulging or swelling is basically caused by to much heat, vast changes in temperature and/or moisture getting into the battery itself. For safety purposes please do not use bloated or bulging batteries when flying or operating your drone so that the drone's performance will not be affected or compromised . Using bloated or bulging batteries might lead to damaging of the aircraft, or worse, damage to property. For reference I will be posting a link where in you can check the DJI Mavic Air Intelligent Flight Battery Safety Guidelines. In addition please dispose of the said batteries properly. In Have a safe and happy flying always.

I feel your pain OP, mine didn't last more than a year either.

DJI knows their batteries are crap, only has the gut to offer 6 months warranty on them.

the contradictory tone is frustration:

limitation of mavic air operational environments & cautionaries (congest people infrastructures, obstacles, interferes, user knowledge skills abilities, device maintenance & operation)

restricted, nightflight is cooler environment, but adds risk of handicap darkness viewing purview

designers likely abandoned altogether power tempering. it increases incident liabilities, although we do see its benefit in phones & laptops to preclude battery destruct.

while airborne, determination was founded flight endure overrides battery demands regardless destructive

The manual warns you about the acceptable battery temperature during use. Next time, look at the battery temp in the app, during flight and make certain you don't exceed the limit for your model. The more power you use, the hotter the battery insides get. Even in the UK at 30C, the battery temp will climb to 45C with gentle flight.
Use the app and keep below the max temp and your batteries will last. This applies to all uses for lipo and is a chemistry thing, not a design fault.

Absolutely dangerous. Don't fly with it and don't keep it stored. It could burn without any advice

if u did use them according to manual, yet they still "puff" - just use Your consumer EU law to replace faulty item (2year protection)
it's not manufacturer warranty which DJI offer (6m). use help from consumer center in Your contry to give You help and some guide how proper address claim etc.

and as other said - this battery is now a fire hazard! get rid of it in selected places, and if u have to, store them in some lipo-bag far away from anything flamable

It's been hot-as-balls here lately -- are you implying that battery swelling is more prone to happen when flying on a very hot day?

Tank you so much for your very interesting pictures. Yes, it is common understanding that any sort of visual or physical damage to a Lithium ion battery is actually dangerous. Risk of overheating and even explosion. So, please dispose of these batteries in an approved manner.

Crikey, didn't get around to disposing of the battery and jeez, it's swollen to the point of huge concern. Thanks for your replies. I'll be sure take it to the... recycling center? i guess these batteries are recyclable right?
