You will now be swamped with FREE .. Budget .... Moderate and High priced solutions that each person believes are best ...

My questions may help to narrow down the possibles :

1. Free or Paid program ?
2. Windows or MAC ?
3. Simple or advanced ?
4. For just personal / Youtube use or Commercial ?

I'm a cheapskate Windows user and basically refuse to pay for what is essentially a hobby app for me. 99% of the time I use Windows Live Movie Maker - its free and easy to use. No need to worry about Time Lines, Audio Lines, Frames etc. You can add / deduct audio / music, photos etc. Add captions Title / Credits.

Move up to the still free Movie Maker 2.6 which brings in the frames and line features, more complicated to use but a powerful FREE program for Windows.

Windows 10 actually has a built in video editor in the Photo section ... but I find it strange to use ...

Into paid ... and a decent budget suite is NCH Software ... similar to Movie Maker with all the frame / timeline stuff ...

many budget programs out there ... simple google will roll them out !

Then we come to professional expensive stuff like DaVinci (I know there's a limited free version - but IMHO - its ***** !)

It all depends what you want and whether Windows or MAC .. and what you are willing to pay / time spent to learn to use.

Not sure what the asterisx's mean, but probably not good. But why are you down on the free version of Resolve? The very few features not included in the free version are hardly important, unless you want to do 3D work. The biggest problem with Resolve is that it requires a high end computer and takes a long time to learn, other than that, it has more bang-per-buck than any other editor on the planet (given that the bucks are zero).

And to the poster, there is no one application that does both still photos and movies, they are completely seperate operations. So, if you want a definitive answer, define your objectives a bit more, which platform, how much will you pay....

I installed it and tried to get to grips with it .. agree it has a lot in it even the free version - but in the end I could not see why all that effort to learn it when lesser programs provided reasonable 'hobbyist' editing.

I am surprised at the comment about Stills and Video's requiring separate applications .......

I have many videos where both stills and video are used and edited in the same final file. But apart from that - Live Movie Maker will allow you to change frame characteristics ... remove black border ... change display time ... jump up to Movie Maker frame based and you can choose / crop / join ... etc. Not that I need that ... but its there.

But as I said and you repeat ... it all depends what OP wants ...

If he wants to commercialise his videos / stills - then fine go with DaVinci ... but if its hobby - then why ?  Given average computer ... Youtube downgrading the video on upload ... most of the lesser freebies are fine.

"tried to get to grips with it"

Yeah, that's the key. It is not easy to get on with, that's for sure, but no other editing system offers as much as Resolve. It is a full-featured pro editor that you can get for free. But it takes a lot of computing resources and time to get familiar. And I agree, there are lots of others out there that will do a great job for hobbyists.
