Do they work in all modes or they only work in some modes?  The M2 disables side sensors unless you are in Tripod mode or some other intelligent flight mode but in normal it does not.

Really? wow?  Is there any way to mod beginner mode to be normal mode so we have side sensor capability?  What is the idea behind not being able to have side sensors at all??

Really? Wow? ... if you'd read your manual, it already answered your question.
Page 29:  The  3D  Infrared  Sensing  System  is  only  active  in  Beginner  mode  and  Tripod  Mode.  Fly  with  caution.

The infrared sensors detection range is much less than the forward/backward sensors so they cannot operate at higher speeds.

I always look to see the area is clear before strafing sideways.
