This is interesting, and helpful, in reforestation.

In Australia, we have been planting trees from the air for many years. The seedlings are encased in a paper-mache tube with a hardened and pointed end. This means the tree pod, when dropped from an aircraft at a certain altitude, will partially penetrate the ground when it impacts. The paper dissolves away in time leaving the seedling planted in the ground with a greater chance of taking root. Many thousands of these are dropped from the air in a given run, and the whole process is quite quick.

I planted trees by hand one summer, with a team of about a dozen.

So it seems odd that this could be accomplished by gravity alone.

The ground can be very hard, even with a sharp shovel.

australia did not create ariel tree planting, actually develpoed in hawaii during the 1930's
then reinvented in the 70's and then in the 99 a former RAF pilot, Jack Walters developed the method, and has been developed by the US manufacturer Lockheed Martin Aerospace.” which came up with the idea of using c130 transports.
sorry not aussie, it's USA and UK, there's all sorts of info out there about plant bombing.

I did not say we invented aerial planting, I just said it has been in use here for decades. And whether it was 'developed' by Lockheed Martin or not, do you think we simply sat around all those years and suddenly thought about it recently. Other countries develop ideas without the help of the US you know!

The method of planting, using 'plant spikes', was developed by our CSIRO organisation many years back, to work in our environment with Australian native trees.
