Hi guys, I'm a newbie to drones and regulations. I just finished registering my mavic 2 Pro under part 107 and labeled my registration on the drone. I live in Herndon, VA 20170 which according to B4UFLY app is a CLASS B airspace (says "airsapce authorization required"). I've done my due deliigance in trying to reasearch about LAANC but as a beginner this seems a bit overwhelming. The airport near me is IAD and I dont see it in the LAANC list which probably means a manual request is needed ?

My intension is to fly and test my drone in my own backyard well below 400ft (most probably 50-100ft), so can you guys tell me what I need to do specifically to be legally authorized to do it.

Thanks in advance

Hi, thanks for the inquiry. You may use our geo-zone map via our website to check the level of the restriction of your preferred location. You may also unlock this location if in any case, that this would be under the Authorization Zone. Please refer to the links below for further check. Thank you for continued support.

Good question.  If LAANC is not available then I believe the only available option is an Airspace Authorization.  If you are going to fly in that airspace regularly under Part 107 you probably want an Authorization anyway.  Once granted you won't have to seek approval for every flight as long as you are abiding by the UASFM heights  Authorizations can be requested from your DroneZone Account.  https://faadronezone.faa.gov/#/  There could be another way, but that is the one I know of.

look at the AirMap app.  It will show you the ceiling you can fly at using LAANC.  My understanding is that if it is 0 then you will not be able to use LAANC and you will need to go with an Airspace Authorization through the FAA.  if it is say 100 ft or higher (my area) then you are under the class B and LAANC will still work up to that altitude
