The castle of Biar, is a castle of the twelfth century, located on a hill overlooking the town of Biar, in the Alto Vinalopó region, province of Alicante, Spain. It is one of the great attractions of the municipality of Biar and is listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest and declared a historical-artistic monument belonging to the National Artistic Treasury by decree of June 3, 1931.
During the Muslim domination there is already news, although scarce, of the fortress, which did not begin to have relevance until the time of Jaime I, it remains as a border castle according to the Treaty of Musk. The building lost its functions during the Modern Age and, although it was used sporadically, it was used as a cemetery and was ruined.2 3 It was declared a historical-artistic monument in 1931 and is on the so-called Route of the Castles of Vinalopó .
Since the end of the twentieth century it has been restored on several occasions, which today is in good condition. The castle was built in stone using masonry and tapial, which was used for the tribute tower. The building is composed of two parts. On the one hand, an enclosure with four semicircular towers at the corners of it, and on the other, a space with four cubic structures and the tribute tower. These towers and other structures constitute the basic defenses of the castle, as well as its elevated position on a rocky mound, the proliferation of small openings in its walls and its battlements auction.
The tribute tower is the most prominent part of the architectural complex. It dates from the twelfth century, is located on one side and reaches a height of 17 meters. Its plant is quadrangular in shape and consists of three floors, acquiring an enormous importance. In the lower floor the so-called canyon turn is used and in the rest of the levels, second and third, the Almohad ribbed vault is used, which, together with those of the neighboring castle of Villena, are some of the oldest in Spain and all the Maghreb, in addition to the only ones used in a military building throughout the Iberian Peninsula.
