New Tello user. I've been flying it around indoors. Much of the time the app complains about insufficient light ("fly with caution"). Daylight coming in through windows is usually enough, but even bright room light at night isn't. Is this normal?

Dear customer, we are sorry to reply you late. Does the APP screen will show you "Ambient light is too weak. Fly with caution"? Please try to calibrate the IMU and change a brighter place to have a test. If convenience, please take a photo or a video showing the issue and the flying environment.

You're not alone, I have the same issue every time I fly indoors.

I too am experiencing this same issue. I just got the Tello a couple of days ago, and anytime I fly indoors I get the low light warning.

The funny thing is I got a Mavic Mini on launch day here in the US (11/11), and I fly it regularly in the same indoors location without any light warnings what so ever.

IMU calibration? Not sure if that is the solution as I'm  not getting any related warnings, but I'll give it a try.

Thank you for sharing this situation with us. Tello uses the vision positioning system. So it's important for Tello to have a suitable flying environment.

Dear, flight environment affect the performance of drone, improper envirnoment, such as weak light will disable the VPS of drone, making drone cannot hover in place and drift, which makes the flight risky, please mind the error information prompts in Tello APP and do relevant adjustment.

I had the Tello for some time now. No sunlight = no flight. I can barely fly it with a led lamp bc once I fly out of the area where the lamp light is it is "too dark" and vision positioning system is unavailable. I tried putting my light on the brightest setting and then VPS worked but as soon as I flew close to a corner no more VPS. The camera sees perfectly but the sensors cant see anything under normal house lights. So if you buy a Tello make sure to buy a good bright led light or else you can't fly it indoors.
