I noticed on my SD card another IMG folder created once I went over DJI_0999.JPG photos. It created a new folder and started at DJI_0001.JPG again instead of going DJI_1000.JPG in the existing folder. So now I have new images with the same file names...

Hi. thank you for reaching out and we do apologize for the inconvenience. Can you please try to back up all your files on your SD card and try to reformat it to see if the problem persists? Please keep us posted if this will help. Thank you for your understanding.

Yes, this is exactly what it does, has been ever since the first DJI drone came out. The fact that the image is in a new folder means it should not be a problem.

Well, it kind of is a problem if I have multiple files with the same name when I export to my computer. Makes no sense to me why it doesn't continue the counter instead of resetting after 0999.

Don't put the new ones in the same folder on your computer. People who lived in the stone ages knew how to re-number a batch of files using the DOS prompt, but that knowledge has been lost these days. But if you like, something like this will do the trick:

ren DJI_0*.jpg DJI_1*.jpg

That will rename all files in the folder from DJI_0001.jpg to DJI_1001.jpg and so on through the number sequence.

I agree, 1000 is a too little number to reset the counter on, I can understand starting over from over 10k not every thousand images. I wish DJI could change this setting...

The silly thing about it all is the numbering starts at 0000 but it ends at 0999 and restarts again at 0000 in a new folder. They could have just used 000 in that case...

In their stone age Phantom 2 series, DJI actually went to 9999 as most cameras do.
They went to 999 for all models after that.
I agree that it's stupid that DJI's file numbering only goes to 999.
But if it went to 9999 and you still copied all your image files off to the same big folder, you'd still have the same problem after 999 files.

The solution is simple.
Don't dump all your image files into the same big folder.
It's not hard to rename the folder on your SD card with a data and location before copying the whole folder across to your computer.
It will make finding particular images easier too if you can identify subfolders by where or when you shot them.

I don't dump them in the same folder. I label every folder for every shoot. But the shoot on the weekend was split where some photos are up to 0999 then the later ones sit at the top at 0001. Just annoying more than anything.

And if DJI went to 9999, the same thing would happen when you get to 9999.
It's just how all cameras deal with it but it happens more often with DJI because they use 999.

Sure. But it will happen a lot more only going to 999. Seems like a bug to me if they have 0000 to start with...

I shoot a lot and have to deal with it almost every week.
It becomes just a minor annoyance.

With that being said. Say you have multiple DJI drones and you shoot with them all day. Would there not be duplicate file numbers if they started at image #1  when uploading to a cp?

With the file numbering only going to 999 there are many technical reasons you would want to record more than 999 in one folder, it makes it difficult when running a map using an RTK equipped drone and processing with PPK. There are many ways you can look at this problem but for the more professional applications a file numbering system that would allow as many as 9999 pictures to be placed into one folder would help AND this should not be a difficult thing for DJI to do.

That’s why you rename all your photos. Why would you let DJI do that for you anyway?
