If I remember the story correctly, it was a one of a number of decentralised airstrips constructed during the war where military aircraft could 'escape' to if/when the Japanese bombed the main airport in Darwin. In most cases, like this one, they were build next to the main highway, heading south from Darwin. There was a squadron of Spitfire aircraft based in Darwin during the war, and later on, US aircraft.
I found another 2 airfield running right along the Stuart Highway just north of this one. I have the videos edited and ready to go. They are fascinating to find and explore. |
