Aloha King,

Found it.  Found the sign to (next to the electric substation).  Different as the Google Earth image indicates.  You provided some good clues.  Any idea why they changed the name to Lachlan E Purkis Memorial Airfield?

Aloha and Drone On!

If I remember the story correctly, it was a one of a number of decentralised airstrips constructed during the war where military aircraft could 'escape' to if/when the Japanese bombed the main airport in Darwin. In most cases, like this one, they were build next to the main highway, heading south from Darwin. There was a squadron of Spitfire aircraft based in Darwin during the war, and later on, US aircraft.

The naming of the base I am not sure. I did see that google had named it something else, but I couldnt find anything to prove otherwise so just left it in.

I found another 2 airfield running right along the Stuart Highway just north of this one. I have the videos edited and ready to go. They are fascinating to find and explore.

Aloha King,

Using Google Earth, I saw the electric substation and an intersection next to it.  So I went down to Street View and sure enough the sign for "Hughes Airstrip" was right there.  Apparently the one you got on video is a newer sign.  So it is definitely Hughes Airstrip.

Aloha and Drone On!
