Just outside flying the MM for the first time and have this icon, what does it mean ?

Show the position through the compass, on the dotted line an arrow indicates the direction in which the drone points (if upwards the drone moves away from you, downwards it approaches).

you are referring to the icon from the manual, number 12 my icon looks nothing like it and when in flight it stays the exact same.

It almost looks like a small tablet with a line through it.

Well it seems that the issue was firmware related, I upgraded to the latest FW and the icon now shows correctly

...and where is the firmware...?
...my samsung s6 is porked same way...

the red icon is showing it can't currently get valid compass data from your phone so it can't show you the relative orientation

Use the DJI asst software to update the FW

That is the Aircraft Orientation Indicator.  It shows the bird's heading & direction relative to the RC.  My guess is your device lacks a GPS/compass, or you have Location Services disabled, so it is unavailable with your current setup.

See my earlier post, updating the FW fixed it

I use my MM with an old S6, no bother, only when I'm near metal or dont have eniugh satellites will the compass orientation play up

This icon indicates the mobile GPS signal is weak, if the GPS signal is normal, it is an aircraft orientation icon. Good to know you had sorted it out.
