im wondering how the 48MP mode work? is it simply 4 times 12MP photos merged from the sensor?
or is it a real 48MP sensor?

sensor is effective 48 mp. the 12 mp is when the quad-bayer filter jumps in.

It is a real 48MP sensor but it only has the color resolution of a 12MP one (the "quad" in "quad bayer" actually means "4 times less") . And it is not new tech; there are more advanced, bigger (1/1.7") 64MP black and white / 16MP color resolution sensors around...

That's how I see it too. But the sensor is probably 'borrowed' from a phone.

Hi, there. Thanks for your attention. The 48 MP means the maximum valid pixels on the 1/2.0’’ CMOS sensor is 48 million, and this is the actual pixel data.
For CMOS under different pixels, the photosensitive area of a single pixel is different. The smaller the pixel area, the poorer the photosensitive performance. The Mavic Air 2 CMOS sensor uses the Quad Bayer filter array, where adjacent pixels come in the same color, making high-sensitivity shooting possible. Even when reaching 48 effective megapixels, high-resolution images can be captured.
