Hey for all you video/Phantom gurus.... Can someone please give me detailed advice on using ND filters.  I have no idea how dark to go/how many "layers"  and WHAT SETTINGS for the camera while using the filters.  I imagine it has alot to do with how bright/sunny it is.  Please help...!
I bought these on ebay

Here's some good information about how ND filters work:

My general rule of thumb is:

Very bright, sunny day - ND-16
Bright, sunny day - ND-8
Partly sunny/cloudy day - ND-4

If you have doubts about how bright it is and it doesn't appear to be all that bright, you might be able to get away with the ND-2 filter.

In all cases, your best attempts/experiments should involve an ISO setting of 100. On my DSLR I often shoot with ISO at 200 but I often end up with a huge mix of indoor/outdoor shooting. In the case of our Phantoms, not many of us are shooting indoors.

I've found that whenever the sun isn't behind a cloud it will require atleast ND-16, even here in the UK on a cloudy/sunny day my ND 8 wasn't enough. I cant imagine anything lower than ND-8 would be of much use at all - Adam

shutter speed should be 1/60 if you redorc in 4K/30 or for example 1/120 when you record in 1080P/60. ISO should always be 100, at least i try to get always ISO 100 to get the best image, high ISO will create noise. It depends on the lighting what ND you need, maybe 8, maybe 16 or even 32. When you just put on an ND filter in auto mode, the camera will maybe not set shutter speed to 1/60 etc.. So this is not good.

I agree. I usually use 1 x ND8 + 1 x POL-filter or if very bright, the ND16 filter. ND4 might be sufficient on cloudy days.

I offer a 5-Pack with four ND-filters to choose from (they can stack if needed) and a Polarizer-filter (POL-filter) at http://www.PhantomFilters.com $24 with free shipping worldwide - or a 3-Pack for $15 (or 4-Pack for $18) - always with shipping included.

I put a video together that explains this.

- How to add and remove filters
- Start with the video settings you want to shoot at for resolution and frame rate
- Test lighting with no filter to determine exposure
- install ND filter and verify settings
- switching resolutions and frame rates will often need a different ND filter
- how to access manual camera controls and keep exposure locked.

In this example in my backyard in Chicago and it was daylight but not very bright. I used a 2-stop ND filter, (also called .6 or ND-4) and also a 3-stop ND filter (also called .9 or ND-8). To get darker than 3-stops reduction I stack them. I have never needed more than a 5-stop reduction.

I sell these kits as seen on the video.
