The P2 is always to hand, so I was just in time to focus on the bird before it spotted me and took flight.

Yes. I had been stood on a bridge nearby, for several minutes, taking pictures. And it did not move.
But when I went down to the riverbank, it watched me warily for a few moments, and then flew off.

My neighbour have a bigger pond with a lot of fish, which are visited of a Grey Heron, almost every day. And I have many times stood and watching when "he" flies in, which are exactly in same way every time, which are in a great circle, where "he" feels  out of sight.
And when I'm in another position to watch "him", he change the flight directions ;-)
So they are always watching!

Just the right place, at just the right time, with just the right tools at hand.

Nice one. :-)

I've been trying to "catch" this particular bird for over six months. Today was my lucky day

I've been trying to "capture" that bird for six months - since we came back to live here. The river is just below my home

Very nice slomo.    You couldn't of had better timing.  The wing span of those herons is quite impressive.

I guess for their size it does take that much wing span to take off.

Yep. lift to weight ratio, then aerodynamic qualities.
Which aero engineer calculated that the bumblebee should not theoretically be able to fly?

Your query had me do a little research and this is the interesting find.

Short and stubby, the bumblebee doesn't look very flight-worthy. Indeed, in the 1930s, French entomologist August Magnan even noted that the bumblebee's flight is actually impossible, a notion that has stuck in popular consciousness since then.

Michael Dickinson, a professor of biology and insect flight expert at the University of Washington stated the whole question of how these little wings generate enough force to keep the insect in the air is resolved.  He says the big misconception about insect flight and perhaps what tripped up Magnan is the belief that bumblebees flap their wings up and down.  Actually, with rare exceptions, they flap their wings back and forth.

Yes, there was an interesting documentary about that very subject on the TV not long ago.

Well we're in the UK, so maybe our TV programmes don't get screened in the US.
