Weird friend request

I checked my reminders on my personal homepage and saw a friend request. Usually I haven't found these as a cause for an alarm, and I have gladly accepted them as they have been real people who have actively taken part on the forums, and I have seen their posts and replies before. But now I feel a bit suspicious, as when I checked this latest request's profile page, I found out it has only activated yesterday and they have no posts, no threads, no replies, no PMs for me, nothing. Also, the username seemed to be randomly generated. What popped into my mind was that I have been reporting these spam posts here pretty often and maybe somebody wants revenge - a chance to send malware or something similar. Yet on the other hand, I thought that maybe I am paranoid and it's just because it's a fresh account.

So far, I haven't accepted nor denied the friend request. Has anybody had a similar situation? How did it turn out? Was it safe after all or did you end up with something unpleasant through it?

All thoughts and opinions welcome. Thanks in advance!

I have received a few friend requests from brand new users with no posts, etc. so I have kindly said NO to the request.  Not sure what their motive for sending a friend request would be.

It could be that that might be the best recourse for action in these cases. Just checked out their profile and they still don't seem to have posted anything.

Feels quite shady...

Could be shady.    Otherwise, why would a Newbie with no posts start seeking friends?

I didn't mean you, I know you are a real person and have truly participated in the forums.

Just send me that friend request and I'll be more than happy to accept it :-)

I'll help you out, I send you a request :-)

For later use, you can ask a person to be a friend by going to their personal page (you can do that by clicking on their username) and clicking the 'Add Friend' button in there. :-)

We were thinking alike on this.

Yes, there are some generally good guidelines of common sense to bear in mind when adventuring on the web.
