Yes you can,  go to camera view and the three dots,  about and tap check firmware and it will trigger the RC update.

Thanks for reply , check for updates greyed out .my drone has broken and on way to dji so cant connect it.

How about using DJI Assistant 2 to update the RC.

You can download the DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drone Series) here.

It's not hard to use.  Just download and install on your PC.  Open the Assistant 2 and log in using your DJI Account info.  Then start your RC.  Connect a cable between PC and RC and then the Assistant 2 will recognize the RC and you follow the prompts from there.  


Here is a DJI on how to use the Assistant 2 if you need it.  It covers the Mavic 2 but the process is almost the same.

Did you make sure the wifi is on?    I always update the controller before doing the drone.
