I’ve the last 18 months I constantly been hassling dji about a bug that got introduced about 18 months ago in the fly app for smart controller. Others had the same issue with the orientation of the controller pointing 90 degrees out from its actual direction - it was the app , which was proved by running a compass app on the controller too.
Others had posted here about the same problem.

Yesterday I updated to 1.6.9 and went for a flight- finally the controller points to where it should.
Before - you  could  the drone in front of you, handset pointing towards it but the compass/direction indicator would always point 90d to the left.

It’s fixed! Yay. Attached is a photo of controller screen showing drone location and all orientations correct.
Update people if you have this issue.
