There is a GPS in both the controller and the drone - the GPS state is only shown for the drone.There should be a second set of icons for the GPS state in the controller too.

It IS shown for the controller and drone. In the Attitude Indicator, there is a Blue Plane icon for the drone and a blue/green dot for the controller. The blue dot turns green when you have it pointed at the drone.

It would be nice to have a status icon in the top right corner.. I am aware of the map, but this does not show the state of the GPS in the controller.

Yeah it does. If the dot is there, you have good gps lock.

But sometimes with a blue/dot green the signal isn`t good enpoug to set HP to the controller/device
The drone GPS icon top right is amber = GPS lock, white GPS loch + HP is (can) be set.

So the blue/green dot doesn`t say enough about the controller/device status.
