h264 vs h265, does any difference exist?

Hi,

When I record in h264/h265 the file sizes are basically the same, and so is the quality (to me).

Is it the case that at 150mbps h264 is more than enough for 4k/60, and such we are in placebo territory.

Thanks

That links suggests:

4K h264 needs 32 mbps
4k h265 needs 15 mbps

DJI M3P used 150mbps for both! Which would seem to be massive overkill.

that is because if they would aim for smaller mbps, they will need to embrace much higher QF and that take a lot more processing power. even on PC 8 Core CPU it takes a lot of power to process at 100% CPU utilization..

Makes sense, thanks.

Hi there. Thank you for reaching out. Kindly please refer to the information below with regards to the Frame rate, coding format, and video bitrate of each video resolution for the DJI Mini 3 Pro for your future reference. Hope this helps. Thank you for your valued support.

yeah, that we know, but the original poster question was, why they using such High Mbps? h.265 clearly should provide on a much lower Mbps then an h.264 with the same image quality.
Also they not mentioning what QF they are using or any other h.265 parameters. buttom line , there is no real added value using h.265 (vs h.264) on the mini 3 , as they are not using the features and compression level HVEC provides compare to AVC (h.264).
you better off using h.264 as it is compatable with many more playback devices then, h.265 and draw less power playing/decoding.

Yeah, it does not make much sense. The quality should be the same but it should be using a much smaller bitrate thus producing a much smaller file, that's the whole idea of h.265, same quality at a lower bitrate for faster upload and or broadcast, so why DJI is using the same bitrate for h.265 compared to h.264 throughout the whole range of quality and fps is beyond my comprehension.

Although, what DJI is saying is that recording at 48, 50 or 60fps in 4k is possible due to h.265. Has anyone tried 4k at 60fps in h.264? I suspect it's not possible, but at 150 bitrate, that's file is gonna huge
I also suspect that the battery will not last as long and also perhaps the AC is more susceptible to overheating when using h.265 due to higher CPU usage.

I have done a number of tests, 4k even when viewed on a 43" screen at 2x zoom, I can see no difference in H264 v H265 at 150mbps.

You probably won't, 4k is 4k after all, the difference should be seen in the file size but as it cannot do 150mbps in h.264 you will never know if there is a difference in file size.

Yes, you will see differences in H265 vs H264, as at high res like 4K all H265 will give you a plus of details.
Is about ho compression works and how the blocks of image are built.
Is a very long discussion, just search for my post related to H264 vs H265, you will see that at zoom 4X you get +20% more details in H265 vs H264.
Cheers.
