A 20% increase in annual licence cost, on top of 11% last year ?

If you think this is excessive you have less than a week to respond to the CAA.

It won't affect you, but we Brits are pretty annoyed about it

Wow, that is an outrageous price hike Mr. B.  Hope all you Brits respond your thoughts on this to the CAA as quickly as possible.

I've added my voice to the debate already, via the link.
Rip-Off Britain is a journalistic tagline that fits.

I like your tagline.  It could be shortened to ROB as in you are being robbed by this increase.

I can surely see why you - and probably who-knows-how-many others - find that irritating. I would imagine that was already expensive enough as it is.

No need to charge at all.  In France it's FREE.

I saw this in tutorials section.   They ask a lot of questions to not make it easy.

My personal feeling is that the authorities want to hound us out of the skies. For the six years I've been involved in the hobby I've seen the ever-changing rules and regulations, reduction in weight categories and other restrictions. Always another hoop for us to jump through

I don’t understand why they would want to do that. They make money off our registrations.

Far more money available from licensing commercial drones delivering packages (Amazon and the like) and recreational drones might get in the way of  those activities.

Not least of which are birds
Most commercial traffic though doesn't occupy  the lower 120m AG. It's all above 150m or so.
And it's this lower segment that the likes of Amazon will want to operate their single-item delivery drones in - where they'll be less susceptible to deflection by the wind.
I'm actually sceptical as to whether drone deliveries of small packages will be widespread in the UK in the near future (certainly not in my lifetime )

I did the nats test the other day and it dawns on me that there is a gap between up and commercial of 30m. They could use that gap.  Apart from landing I guess.

I just read this about helicopters:

There is no legal minimum altitude for flying a helicopter. However, pilots must ensure that their flight does not create a hazard to persons or properties on the ground. Other types of aircraft must maintain an altitude of 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle when flying over congested areas.

Weird.  The nats thing said “ 500ft from people, vehicles, vessels and structures. ” for light aircraft.  Maybe congested means like housing estates.

Yes, large towns and cities.
I keep meaning to ask - did your brother post to the forum before he gave you his drone?
And has he replaced it with something else for himself?
