Despite furious pressure from locals, a nearby village has been temporarily cut in two for essential Railway Bridge repairs.
Already, travel chaos has the villagers in turmoil, and several businesses have felt it necessary to close.

More information on the Network Rail website.

I felt the need to take a look with both the Pocket2 and the Mini3Pro

At least our favourite café is on the right side of the divide, for us
Trouble is, they're one of the businesses likely to suffer from the lack of custom.

Great captures, thanks for sharing. Are there alternate ways to move from one side of the village to the other?

Great captures, thanks for sharing. Are there alternate ways to move from one side of the village to the other?

For the moment, pedestrians can walk through - but only until the scaffolders have finished erecting the platform for the real work to begin. Commuters are obliged to make a ten-mile detour through another village. And in February even the trains will be cancelled to allow work on the bridge and track.
And pedestrians will have to detour through a local park - about half a mile.
Bus services are also disrupted and several routes have had to be rescheduled or cancelled altogether.

No train on the bridge, sadly. But I did get a glimpse of one...bottom right.

It's causing utter chaos, and loss of business for many.  I'll re-visit occasionally, weather permitting.

Thanks. The snow does add something to an image, doesn't it.
The travel chaos is pretty horrendous for commuters.
And will continue into early April, it seems

Very nice shots Mr. B.    The snow adds to the shots for sure.

This is a really chaotic situation for the people who live there for the next 3-4 months (per the article link).

It's a real upheaval for all concerned.  I enjoyed the snow while it lasted.  It seems to have largely melted away now. We're off to Buxton, which takes us over the hills, so we'll see if any snow remains up there

Buxton....wasn't that where the gent just entered a guilty plea of flying his Mini 3 Pro to close to a vintage aircraft?  Seems like I read that in the recent news.

It does, but NOT before you got a shot of it.  Besides if it melts you don't have to shovel it off.  Or it could pile up like this.....

Wow, that sounds like a massive disruption. Too bad they could not have phased the work so that one side of the passageway could remain open while the other was being repaired.

It's a hot potato politically.  The necessary repairs could have been completed in four weeks, had it not been for the fact that the bridge is a Listed Structure (protected status) and so the work is far more complicated to preserve its appearance.  Hence it will take three times as long. Sand-blasting the steelwork will preclude any kind of access.  An asphalt footpath detouring through the local park has already been laid so that pupils from the "wrong" side of the divide can get to school.
It's bureaucratic madness which will cost extra millions of pounds, potentially ruin some local businesses, and cause headaches for commuters for months.

Some of my projects are listed historic structures, which requires significant additional review and cost for work to preserve aesthetic features. It seems bureaucracy translates pretty evenly, then.

Yeah. Sometimes though, these preservation orders get in the way of common sense.
Our property is in a Conservation Area. We're not allowed to replace draughty old wooden window frames with modern double glazing unless it's identical in appearance to the existing frames( costing 3 times as much). Meantime we're being advised by the government to save energy by upgrading insulation (including double and triple glazing) to save the planet. And yet just across the road new homes are being built using modern materials - no wood in sight.  It's pure madness. The inconsistencies beggar belief.

The same thing happens here, although usually it is a public historic or military structure. The US Navy is particularly rife with these kind of buildings, as are older east coast colleges and universities that date back to the 1700s.
