I was going to ask about taking off from Boston Common next week but I just came across a Boston Virtual Imaging LLC  video  that answers my question. The only thing stopping me now is the run-around from Logan/FAA. I called Logan, then given the number to call operations, operations gave me the number for airport manager, manager gave me the number for control tower, control tower gave me number to regional operations office of the FAA (based in Georgia haha), FAA gave me number to Boston's Flight Standards Office of the FAA......Still waiting for a return call but not holding my breath. I've contacted the local precinct and the captain at least was cool about it and said when I'm in the city and since it would be a very short flight he would have an officer accompany me for the 5 or 10 minutes it would take me to get the footage I want.......but still won't unless I get clearance.

Holy crap i am dizzy now, got to go take my nausea medicine.
And yeah logan is across the street LOL

Edit:

Come to think of it, its not worth it, you can mount the phantom on a phantom selfie stick and take video like that, i am starting to go towards things that are far away from any buildings or airports or nosey humans.

Thats what I'm thinking, nothing to see in a city anyway accept people jabbing their arms or cops beating on someone and all you need is a cell phone for that. The real beauty is by nature anyhow.

I would have thought that Boston air control would have been covered by New York. The Baltimore Washington DC area is covered by New York.

The only problems I've encountered with helicopter flights has been with the airport managers and one Secret Service agent.

I went off on the airport manager when he told me he didn't like photographers. Without the money that I spent on rentals, he wouldn't be needed.

Agreed!  Sick of it, even in jest. Absurd.

As to the original post, call the TOWER when you start, and call the TOWER when you are finished. That is all you need to do.

PS: It is NOT for permission; it is to tell them who you are, where you are, your flight max altitude, and when you plan to fly. They work for YOU. Just be responsible and sensible.

Unfortunately just as RC pilots are giving "us" a bad name, so to are the many officers of today giving god officers a bad name……every day you read of an officer killing the unarmed, arrest for rape or kiddie porn, drugs etc. If you do the math, of the 1.1 million plus or minus officers, per capita there is more crime within than q public….fact.

I mean no insult to you.

This isn't the forum for this discussion. So, again, I meant no disrespect or insult.

I have 3 relatives whom are officers or in some capacity of law enforcement and they are disgusted as well.

I do not think it was a generalization though. Maybe it is just where I live….of the combined 63 officers from adjacent towns 6 have been arrested and jailed,  for 1 rape, 1 rape of a minor, 2 drugs, 1 child porn and 1 beating a man in the jail cell that was brought in for only protective custody….several more but these are most recent…..why I feel as I do.

We can end this thread now.

Humans suck.  That's pretty general I guess.  : )

Agreed with the generalization - nobody ever wins once a conversation takes that left turn.

Very much agreed with calling the tower.  They are not there to judge you.  They just want to know where you are so they can warn other planes in the area.

I stay away from humans when flying, but if I had a need to film near them, I would do the exact same thing, and have an officer accompany me - mostly for my own protection.  Even a sweater swatter, or a fishing line caster would hesitate before doing anything stupid.

Wait, LICENSED PILOT, you're a retired cop AND a quad flyer?  Does every TV screen in your house have a size 10 shoe sticking out of it?

You never worked on Wall Street, did you?  Cause that would just be over the top ....   : )

Thats what i am going to do when i go to NYC i got plenty of friends who are active duty officers in manhattan and Brooklyn, so maybe it will be easy for me to find a nice secure spot without harassment from the public while having police escort, we will see if i am lucky to convince one of them lol.
