DJI Pocket 2 Overheating?

Hi everyone,

I bought a DJI Pocket 2 two weeks ago, and I started to notice that the camera starts to overheat very easily. I'm usually recording in 4k/25fps but after just a few minutes of usage the camera gets quite warm and starts to automatically cut the recordings (making the footage unusuable). Now, I'm trying to move the clips from the camera to my computer but here as well, if I try to do it with via the camera it gets very hot and blocks me from moving the footage.

I'm curious if someone has similar issues, or if something is wrong with my camera. Would be happy to hear about your experience.

My Pocket 2 has gotten warm several times but never overheated where it automatically cutoff. Check out the below thread and in particular Post 2.

Hi there. Thank you for reaching out. The DJI Pocket 2 can record 4K 60fps video with a bit rate of up to 100 Mbps. The measured data volume of video files generated in one minute can reach 700 MB. It is normal for the product to emit heat when processing such a large amount of data in a short period of time.

DJI has paid special attention to this issue when designing the product. The newly added internal "T-shaped" passive heat dissipation will efficiently transfer heat to the metal heat dissipation area of the gimbal's pan axis base to ensure the normal operation of the product. After repeated tests, DJI has determined that the temperature of the handle area will stay within a reasonable range when recording, even if recording for a long time. Please feel free to use your product.

In addition, the device has a built-in overheating protection function. When the temperature reaches a certain level, the device will carry out self-protection to prevent the device from damage. Please rest assured.

I've had my Pocket2 for a couple of years now, and although it does get warm, it doesn't exhibit any of the problems you describe.  Have you checked your SD card?  May be time to replace it.

I used the pocket 2 for several years, also sometimes filming 5-6 hours straight at 4K 60fps without a single break/pause while leaving it plugged into a power bank. No overheating issues so far.

Do note that the attached optional accessories and the surrounding conditions can affect the possible overheating problem. For instance, I have noticed that using the Pocket 2 with the DIA-Handle and a tablet or a phone wirelessly can make it heat faster inside normal room temperature. Yet when I was making a timelapse on my balcony on a relatively cool day, I had no problems running it for multiple hours even when attached to a powerbank.

Also, the resolution could have it's own role in the possible problem. Usually, I film at 1080p and haven't got too many problems with that, but not sure how it would act with 4K resolutions. At least the ActiveTrack struggles way more with 4K than with FullHD, so I assume it would be more taxing to the hardware, therefore possibly causing more heat.

Never had overheating issues.
But I always film in 2.7K at 50fps.

I use the Pocket 2 to record amateur stage performances in 4K 50p using WiFi to control it either remotely at the front of the stage or hand-held on the extension stick for rehearsals. I'm pushing the camera far beyond its specification and of course it overheats and the WiFi shuts down but it usually continues to record. Sometimes I get an hour or so but other times it records a whole show. Plugging a USB power pack into the USB-C port will extend the record time but overheating still happens. Its an amazing product and I can't wait for the Pocket 3, hopefully with more Pro features.

I use them for a similar purpose, having a discrete camera at each side of the stage, with a justin clamp and a power pack is great.  I have one Pocket 1 and one Pocket 2.

However, the bad is....

When trying to control with wifi, can't control both at once, so I need two phones...
When wifi is on, the P2 gets extremely hot and the wifi shuts down.  This can be a disaster if the camera is not pointing somewhere suitable at the time of shutdown, and there's nothing you can do to change it.

This is at the same 4k 25 fps on each pocket version.

I build a fan with a 3d printed mount to cool the device, and to cover the screen (which you can't turn off), as it would come on when wifi died, meaning the audience would suddenly have a screen light up in their field of view... it runs off the power bank too.

However it does seem the DIA handle is the part that heats up, not the screen, so might have to re-think it... doing some measurements on whether it really makes a difference anyway, which I will share.

The other thing is that you can't charge from usb c to c, as the handshake involved doesn't work with the DIA, or the wifi module on P1, so you must get powerbanks with a USB-A output.

The overheating is a significant problem, only introduced on P2...

I've also encountered overheating problems when recording for long periods (usually dies at 1 hour 10 mins) at 4k60. interestingly enough the dji pocket 2 didn't used to overheat when I first bought it but have started doing so after a year of owning it. at first, I tried using a portable fan which does work but this introduces fan noise into the video. I then tried using an nvme cooler and it has resolved this issue and introduces no noise! I've also connected a powerbank to it and it can chug along fine for over 2 hrs without overheating! hope this helps someone!
