I use the Pocket 2 to record amateur stage performances in 4K 50p using WiFi to control it either remotely at the front of the stage or hand-held on the extension stick for rehearsals. I'm pushing the camera far beyond its specification and of course it overheats and the WiFi shuts down but it usually continues to record. Sometimes I get an hour or so but other times it records a whole show. Plugging a USB power pack into the USB-C port will extend the record time but overheating still happens. Its an amazing product and I can't wait for the Pocket 3, hopefully with more Pro features.
I use them for a similar purpose, having a discrete camera at each side of the stage, with a justin clamp and a power pack is great. I have one Pocket 1 and one Pocket 2.
However, the bad is....
When trying to control with wifi, can't control both at once, so I need two phones...
When wifi is on, the P2 gets extremely hot and the wifi shuts down. This can be a disaster if the camera is not pointing somewhere suitable at the time of shutdown, and there's nothing you can do to change it.
This is at the same 4k 25 fps on each pocket version.
I build a fan with a 3d printed mount to cool the device, and to cover the screen (which you can't turn off), as it would come on when wifi died, meaning the audience would suddenly have a screen light up in their field of view... it runs off the power bank too.
However it does seem the DIA handle is the part that heats up, not the screen, so might have to re-think it... doing some measurements on whether it really makes a difference anyway, which I will share.
The other thing is that you can't charge from usb c to c, as the handshake involved doesn't work with the DIA, or the wifi module on P1, so you must get powerbanks with a USB-A output.
The overheating is a significant problem, only introduced on P2... |
